The Bilbao Looking Glass (Sarah Kelling & Max Bittersohn Mysteries Series Book 4), by Charlotte MacLeod

Sarah finds a strange mirror that, though unbroken, proves to be very bad luck
According to Max Bittersohn, he and Sarah Kelling have witnessed enough murder and unhappiness, so it’s high time they got married. And though Sarah hasn’t yet agreed to such drastic measures, she invites Max to summer with her at Ireson’s Landing. But they haven’t been in the house ten minutes when they stumble upon summer’s first mystery—a mint-condition, antique Spanish mirror that is tremendously rare and valuable. Sarah has never seen it before and she doesn’t know how it ended up in the summerhouse, but the sleuthing couple will soon find this looking glass to be more troublesome than anything Lewis Carroll ever invented. As the zany Kelling clan descends on Ireson’s Landing, Sarah and her beau try to uncover the mystery of the Bilbao looking glass—a quest that is disrupted when a vicious next-door neighbor is found hacked to death with a woodshed ax. By summer’s end, Sarah and Max will learn that some murders can be solved simply by looking in the mirror.

About the Author
Charlotte MacLeod (1922–2005) was an internationally bestselling author of cozy mysteries. Born in Canada, she moved to Boston as a child, and lived in New England most of her life. After graduating from college, she made a career in advertising, writing copy for the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company before moving on to Boston firm N. H. Miller & Co., where she rose to the rank of vice president. In her spare time, MacLeod wrote short stories, and in 1964 published her first novel, a children’s book called Mystery of the White Knight.  In Rest You Merry (1978), MacLeod introduced Professor Peter Shandy, a horticulturist and amateur sleuth whose adventures she would chronicle for two decades. The Family Vault (1979) marked the first appearance of her other best-known characters: the husband and wife sleuthing team Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn, whom she followed until her last novel, The Balloon Man, in 1998.

Light and Humorous
By drkhimxz
Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn are still 'courting' in this, the fourth volume in Charlotte MacLeods series recounting their live and murders together. Sure enough, even though they are out in the 'country', their hope for peace, quiet, and a bit of time together, is shattered by robbery and murder. Having read the volumes appearing before this, and most of those that follow, I am too deeply involved in the affairs of the couple as they met, loved and, still to come, married and became parents, as well as encountered many odd situations and still odder thieves and murderers, to be a fair critic of this still early volume. Take that into consideration as I advise you that this is a good one for series readers and for many others who have an affection for mysteries which, somehow, mysteriously, are now being categorized as "cozy's". The basic human situation is reflected in the fact that Sarah is the widow of a far older man, who like she, was of Aristocratic Boston stock, as were most of her relatives and friends previous to her meeting Max Bittersohn, of solid middle-class origins, who also was, 'perish forbid', Jewish. (Some of the older folk will remember the expression as being one frequently used by, 'Archie', the manager of Radio's, Duffy's Tavern.) The mystery arises out of the theft of valuable art and antiques in this suburban neighborhood, wherein many Boston Blueblood's, vacationed and/or lived. Following the thefts there occurred two murders of prominent female members of the Kelling Clan. Max stands accused of both. How will the couple wriggle out of this one?
As always, MacLeod gives us a warm, human and humorous take on the state of affair.
Readers of any the four series, all of them represented the Kindle purchase list, written by MacLeod will find this one appealing. Others who are willing to taste of her work in this one, should find it appealing......no gritty, blood streaked streets or raw sex, but some nice people who somehow get involved with the stratagems of those who are not nearly as nice. It is light, humorous and easy to read.

Murder,A Looking Glass, Romance and Nutty Relatives
By Lynn T.
The Bilbao Looking Glass is the 4th book in the Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn series. Sarah and Max go to Sarah's property Ireson Landing place for a vacation. Upon entering the house, they discover a Bilboa Looking Glass that does not belong to Sarah hanging in the front hallway. Sarah and Max arrived early for some time alone but it was not to be. Sarah's quirky relatives start arriving much to Sarah's dismay. The phone rings and Sarah is invited to a party. Again this is much to Sarah's dismay. The next day after going over to attend a party at the house, a member of the party is found murdered by an ax.

This starts the events of Sarah and Max being pulled into relatives antics and murder. It appears someone is trying to frame Max.
The book had quite a few suspects. I did not have the plot figured out until the author decided to disclose it. Charlotte MacLeod books are different than most mysteries. She can tell a very good tale in less than 200 pages. The books always contain humor. The plot is always fresh and different. It seems many cozy mysteries are now formula driven. It was a fast and fun read.

Sarah and Max go on vacation at Ireson Landing. They find a valuable Bilbao Looking Glass in the house. Sarah insists it does not belong to the Kellings. Then a neighbor is murdered and then her friend. Are they related or coincidence. Great ending for Sarah and Max.
